Founded in Silence

1996 — A Vision Ahead of Its Time

FashionHarp® was founded in 1996 by iconic designer Karl Lagerfeld, in collaboration with Kelvis Outlook and Roy Bushmann. Originally known as Ready to Wear (RTW), the project began as a private digital archive to catalog Lagerfeld’s creative work. Long before the modern internet could support it, Lagerfeld imagined a virtual space where fashion, design, and culture would live on beyond the physical runway.

2002–2006 — Development of the Prototype

Lagerfeld spent the early 2000s privately developing the platform’s technical and creative framework. RTW evolved into a sophisticated digital system featuring designer portfolios, event scheduling, and multimedia capabilities—foreshadowing what would become FashionHarp®.

2006 — Public Launch of FashionHarp®

In November 2006, RTW was officially unveiled as FashionHarp®, becoming one of the world’s first free digital television channels dedicated entirely to fashion. It revolutionized industry access by offering livestreams, digital showcases, and calendar management—quickly becoming a trusted resource for designers, editors, and fashion institutions.

2006–2014 — Expanding Access and Global Influence

Over the next decade, FashionHarp® played a key role in expanding access to high fashion. It brought real-time coverage of global fashion events to the public and helped elevate luxury houses such as Chanel, Fendi, Paul Smith, and Dolce & Gabbana. By 2014, FashionHarp had official partnerships in all major fashion capitals—New York, Paris, Milan, and Tokyo—and began offering editorial content and digital networking tools.

Built on Light. A nonprofit multimedia platform and cultural archive at the intersection of fashion, technology, and global creativity—designed to echo into the future.

2014 — The Harp & The Fan: A New Era

A transformative moment arrived when Lagerfeld received a mysterious USB engraved with a harp. This led to a six-month creative exchange and culminated in The Harp & The Fan, a virtual couture experience where garments responded to each viewer’s digital identity. This marked FashionHarp’s shift from media platform to interactive art form, redefining how fashion could be experienced.

2017 — Transition to Non-Profit and the Launch of The Masthead

In 2017, FashionHarp® transitioned into a non-profit organization, reaffirming its commitment to accessibility, education, and cultural preservation. That year also saw the debut of The Masthead, a living archive honoring the creative forces who shaped modern fashion—including icons such as Princess Diana, Angelina Jolie, Naomi Campbell, Donatella Versace, and Anna Wintour. Inspired by the legacy of photographer Patrick Demarchelier, The Masthead preserves the visual and cultural stories behind fashion’s most influential contributors.

2018 — Launch of FashionHarpTV+® and Global Accessibility

In November 2018, FashionHarp® introduced FashionHarpTV+®, a 24/7 multimedia network offering trend forecasting, celebrity features, educational content, and real-time coverage of Fashion Week events. The platform opened its membership to users aged 13+, launched inclusive gender and pronoun settings, and further established itself as a hub for emerging creatives, digital editors, and talent managers.

2019 — Honoring Karl Lagerfeld’s Legacy

Until his passing in 2019, Lagerfeld remained deeply involved in FashionHarp’s evolution. His final contribution was a digital message delivered through an avatar, reaffirming his vision:
“Fashion is not only about clothes. It’s about the spirit that stitches past to future.”

His creative legacy continues to guide the platform’s mission and philosophy.

From Silence to Spotlight

2020–2021 — Innovation and Community Building

FashionHarp® introduced a Global News Feed in 2021, providing members with real-time updates, content engagement, and collaborative features. New tools such as the Ask Function allowed users to request profile updates, fostering authenticity and deeper networking within the fashion community. With over 42,000 registered members and partnerships with 4,300+ agencies, brands, and publishers, FashionHarp solidified its role as a dynamic, digital-first creative ecosystem.

2024 — Strategic Growth and International Presence

By 2024, FashionHarpTV+® secured strategic collaborations with major fashion houses including Chanel, Moncler, Roberto Cavalli, and Fendi. With headquarters in Florence, Italy, and Washington, D.C., and creative hubs in New York, Paris, Milan, and Tokyo, FashionHarp® emerged as a truly global platform—bridging fashion with music, film, art, and emerging technology.
